Tamil Murasu -The Iftar That Emphasized Unity
Dr Syed Harun Alhabsyi, Senior Parliamentary Secretary for the Ministry of National Development and the Ministry of Education, noted that it is not always easy for community leaders and individuals from diverse backgrounds to come together, and that social iftar gatherings provide an important platform for this.
“I need not elaborate on what is happening in many parts of the world, including the Middle East. In many places, it is difficult for people of different races and religions to share an iftar meal, engage in conversation, and work towards a common goal for the betterment of society,” he said. He added that such opportunities for gathering should also include discussions on youth and the future direction of society.
He was speaking at a community iftar programme hosted by the Royal Kings Group.
The event, attended by about 150 people, was held on Thursday, 19 March, at Centrium Square. It brought together leaders and representatives from various community organisations, social partners, and members of the public.
As the guest of honour, Dr Syed Harun said, “As we bid farewell to the month of Ramadan, I hope that everyone can celebrate this occasion together in peace, with the harmony that we enjoy in our country.”
Royal Kings Group, which has been organising community iftar events for over a decade, also distributed NTUC vouchers to underprivileged families this year.
“We live in an inclusive society, and this initiative reflects that,” said Mr Sirajuddin, founder and chairman of Royal Kings Group.
“This event goes beyond breaking the fast. It also serves as a platform to strengthen relationships among people from different backgrounds,” said the company’s director, Mr Muhammad Ibrahim.
Mr Mohammed Bilal, president of the Muslim Council of India, said, “It is a joy to take part in a gathering that brings so many people together, in keeping with the Prophet’s teaching that a feast is not complete without the poor.”
“This reflects Singapore’s distinctive multiculturalism,” said Mr S Devendran, CEO of Sree Narayana Mission.
